HATCH, HAMPTON, COKER
James Collins HATCH (b. 9 Feb. 1858 in Port Lavaca, TX), son of Capt. John Nicholson HATCH, worked on the ranch but took an early interest in writing, particularly the history of the area. He wrote articles for the San Antonio Express-News, one of which described a hurricane which destroyed Indianola. The sea covered the city and never subsided. The steam locomotive was caught at the station, and for many years the smoke stack could be seen sticking out of the water in the middle of the bay. James Collins HATCH moved to San Antonio. According to an old newspaper article kept in the family album, "Today, James HATCH of Palacious married Melissa HAMPTON, the prittiest girl in Bexar County." Melissa HAMPTON's mother's maiden name was COKER. The wedding took place in San Fernando Cathedral. After the ceremony, the couple left for a trip to San Pedro Springs (currently known as San Pedro Park). That's about a mile and a half from the church, but in those days it took much longer due to the dirt roads and buggies. There was a hotel at San Pedro Springs that was a popular tourist destination. Being a writer consumed HATCH. In time, the land at Matagorda was foreclosed on for back taxes. James cared so much for accuracy in his writing that he left his wife and six children to go live with the Indians for three years. How his family survived is not clear, but his writing began to attract wide attention. J. Frank Dobie, a noted Texas historian and teller of tales of the "Old West," hired HATCH as a ghost writer. All day long James sat at his old typewriter pounding away, and once a month Mr. Dobie and his secretary arrived to collect the efforts and give James a check. Mr. Dobie frequently used the stories HATCH had written in his books. However, Mr. Dobie never gave James credit for the work, although Alyce Ellen Odom BURKHOLDER is told he did mention James' name once in a book. His parents were: John Nicholson HATCH (b. 12 September 1829 in Calhoun County, TX and d. 18 June 1902); and Annie Marie HATCH (his first cousin), aka Anna Maria (b. 3 August 1830 in Port Lavaca, TX and d. 14 January 1908 in Port Lavaca, TX). He had two siblings: Davis Williams HATCH (b. 14 January 1856 in Port Lavaca, TX) and Fannie Hayes HATCH (b. 18 October 1865 in Port Lavaca, TX). Kristen Howell, Misawa Air Base, Japan
